Orla Kiely @ Target this Sunday

Recently a new fan of Orla Kiely, mainly because of this beautiful leaf print on her bag line. I am a big fan of leaves I am learning. Becoming a bit of a theme in fact...

This Sunday Orla Kiely unveils her dinnerware line at Target. There are a few things I'm not totally a fan of, but very much drooling over the items below.

Odd But Captivating...

MiniMovies takes the search archives leaked by AOL in 2006 and creates a mini series about user #711391. It is odd, sad, and surprisingly captivating. Makes me want to look at my own search behaviors over time to see what they indicate about my mood/life. Also makes you think of those late nights when you can't sleep and you're up browsing the internet for any thought that crosses your mind. Very interesting human study...

Full description of the story behind the documentary here.

Some beautiful images of the day

There is much to blog about when it comes to the inauguration of Barack Obama today. There is much to be hopeful for, and much to be proud of.

Many first that in and of themselves have inspired people to believe in our country once again. Believing that we can change our own ways just a little bit to make the next few years more barable for everyone, as they are going to be tough.

I love that the first message the new Presidential family brought to the White House was one of responsibility and service. Service to our neighbors, service to our Earth, and service to the people fighting to keep us safe. And service to the entire world to lead by example rather than force. Even if force is still required, which I believe it will continue to be, at least on our home ground we can strive to be better citizens ourselves. I think a while back we all forgot what it meant to lead by example, as a nation. I also think it's been a long time since we were sincerely asked by our President to do so. It is surprisingly refreshing.

It helps we now have a President that will be asking that of us publicly as well. It sends a very strong message to the world about our commitment to change and responsibility. I admittedly do not have as much faith in the people around the world less interested in listening, and more interested in revenge, but if there is someone who will continue to speak to America through each step of this, it will be Obama, and he will do it well.

Well, enough social commentary for today... How about a tribute to the very odd name similarities on opposite ends of our political spectrum.

Obama Biden
Osama Bin Laden

Barack Hussein Obama
Saddam Hussein

How come I feel dirty even writing those names in the same vicinity of each other. But seriously, did anyone else find this ironically weird? Or even inspiring, somehow, to see our nation elect without prejudice across several levels...

I am excited for our country.

Photoshop Graffiti in Berlin

Saw this great report on Cool Hunting. Apparently a local group in Berlin are pasting up images of Photoshop tools on top of airbrushed ads. Very clever, and completely changes the context of an image immediately.

Cute Idea - Cute Package Design

Zuny Bookends and Paperweights

Makes you want to buy one for every teacher and Martha Stewart Mom you know - Martha Stewart moms particularly because they would be the only ones who would actually have a desk clean enough to put a cute paper weight on. I doubt I'll ever get there, the whole tidy mom thing. Not in my nature ;) Hi Mom!

Alltop - All the GOOD news...and only the GOOD news

A colleague of mine updated his facebook with a link to the following website. I thought it was very clever and find it funny no one has really done this on a large scale before - say a tv channel that only focuses on positive news.

The site, Alltop - Top Good News News, only features articles reflecting positive and uplifting current events and news reports. While some might argue it leaves you unaware of some of the larger, more depressing stories, leading the media today - in the end we all make choices, why not choose to read some good news for a change.

Another Great Hotel Find - Liberty Hotel in Boston

My cousin reminded me of this amazing hotel that went up in Boston and opened September 5th, 2007. It is located in the old Charles Street Jail House and has some amazingly stunning architectural elements, a great location, and a funny twist on jail house verbiage - naming the hotel 'Liberty' and the in hotel restaurant/bar 'CLINK'. My cousin spent New Years Eve there and has made me very eager to make a trip there myself.

Below is an excerpt from their website on the history and process of building the Liberty Hotel...followed by pictures to drool over.

Commanding in scale, the original granite edifice was innovative for its day, comprising a beautiful cruciform-shaped structure complete with a 90-foot central rotunda and cupola built in 1851. Today, through meticulous planning reflective of the property’s colorful past, this strong and beautiful building is home to a variety of transcendent public spaces linked by historic catwalks – including lobby and reception areas, restaurant, bar, grand ballroom, and meeting rooms – as well as a limited number of guestrooms. Among the other dramatic features that have been preserved are vestiges of jail cells within the hotel lobby bar and magnificent, oversize windows.
Enjoy...

Winter Wonderland

Spent the holidays in Utah. On our last night there, it snowed about 4 inches, all of which stuck to the trees. The next day, it was clear and bright - and looked like a winter wonderland...

I love the concept - but why is Krispy Kreme making flip flops?

Apparently Krispy Kreme workers weren't happy working at Krispy Kreme. I could take that sentence to a number of different places, but instead I will describe these pretty fab flip flops you're looking at. In order to 'put an extra spring in the step' of their employees, Krispy Kreme invested these grass lined flip flops for their workers to wear while on the. I guess it worked - reading some of the press around it - but all I can think about is dirty grass in my glazed donut.

In all honesty I don't eat donuts. So my opinions here don't matter all that much. But seemed like a random way to get some PR - and as an East Coast transplant - I loyally prefer Dunkin' Donuts myself regardless....

(note - written months ago and never published - opps - publishing now :)

Random Find

Found via an ad on Media - beautiful boutique hotel in Beijing. The hotel is named 'The Opposite House'. The pictures of the studio and penthouse rooms are what grabbed me.

Copied or the real deal?

I came across the sheets from my childhood at one of my favorite stores over on Fillmore - Zinc Details - and I was very curious to see they were Marimekko. Now, either my Mom was more fashion forward than I thought - or there is a very big design coincidence going on...

Mom - were those Marimekko sheets I was sleeping in all those years? Anyone else remember sleeping in these in the 80's - they seemed to define an era in our household :)
